Susan Kelleher, D.V.M.
Dr. Kelleher is originally from Buffalo, NY. Don’t worry Dolphin Fans, she doesn’t know football well and roots for anybody who scores! She received her Bachelor’s degree with a dual major in Chemistry and Biology from Alfred University in 1990 and went on to veterinary school at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine.
After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Kelleher fulfilled her dreams of being warm in the winter by moving to Florida in August of 1995. She spent her first 3 1/2 years in small animal practices in South Florida. As time went on and her following of avian and exotic pets grew, she decided to “take the plunge” and start her own practice. The result…Broward Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital. This has been a dream come true: a quiet atmosphere where Dr. Kelleher can focus all her attention on the special needs of unique pets.
In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Kelleher enjoys spending time with her daughters Elba and Claire, her son, Myles and husband Greg as well as the family’s furry, feathered and scaly pets. Her pets include a cat, William, an 90lb African Spur Thigh tortoise named Durda, Xander a Blue and Gold Macaw, and an English Budgie, Nathaniel (sorry, no partridge in a pear tree!). She also enjoys baseball, gardening, reading, knitting, biking, geocaching and sewing. She hosts veterinary students from both the USA and abroad for externships at the clinic and is a well known lecturer at both national and international veterinary meetings.
Many of you who have been clients here for a long time may have noticed that somebody is missing….Maggie. Maggie was Dr. K’s constant companion. She came to the clinic daily with Dr. K and enjoyed both giving and receiving attention. Maggie was with Dr. K since June 26, 1990. She helped children get over their fear of dogs, helped with “grief counseling”, keeping tired toddlers occupied while their parents focused on their pet’s needs as well as keeping people company when Dr. K got behind in appointments. Maggie passed away February 23, 2007. She was just 7 weeks shy of her 17th birthday. She is greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Dr. K is available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and first Saturday of every month for appointments and consultations.
Hayley Healan, DVM
Dr. Healan is joining us for our internship program this year! She is originally from Orange Beach, AL, and Gainesville, GA. She received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Georgia and is a die-hard fan of Georgia football (sorry gator fans).
Alonso Rivero, DVM
Dr. Rivero is joining us for our internship program this year! Dr. Rivero has always had a huge interest in exotic patients. Born and raised in Mexico City, he practiced exotic animal medicine in a private clinic for 3 years; after that, he happily moved to San Diego to work at an animal and bird hospital, which had a very high caseload of exotic patients.
Jasmine is our Jersey girl who enjoys life with her multiple pets, such as Porker, Binx, and Moose. We met her as she made and served us our sub sandwiches and liked her instantly. She started back in 2017 as part of our client services team but has climbed her way to her current position as practice manager. We have enjoyed seeing her grow into our wonderful manager today!
Kiana grew up in New Port Richey, FL while her family is from Bolivia and Portugal. In 2020, she graduated from UCF (go knights!) with her Bachelor’s in Biology/Zoology and a minor in Psychology. She has known she wanted to work with exotic animals ever since she was a little girl, so she was very excited when she got the opportunity to work with us. She loves visiting zoos and beaches, trying new restaurants, and spending time with her family and her dog, Lacey.

He graduated from FAU in 2013 with a major in Biology and devoted his time to avian rescues and nature centers. Creating a symbiotic relationship between animals and humans is just one of his many passions.
Suheily was born and raised in South Florida while her family is from Peru. Like much of our staff, she has many pets of her own such as 3 dogs, 2 cats, a guinea pig, a tarantula, and a snake. She has been a veterinary technician at dog and cat hospitals for the past 3 years. We are the first exotics hospital she has worked at and given how much she has enjoyed exotic pets of her own in the past, she loves working here. Some of her hobbies include fostering animals, spending time with her pets, and going to Disney with her fiance.
Kelsie was born and raised in South Florida. She has 2 cats, a dog, 2 red-foot tortoises, and a tarantula. She has been working with dogs and cats since 2012 and enjoyed every minute of it. In 2015, she welcomed her son, Cole, who became just as passionate about animals as she is. Working with us, Kelsie has found her love for exotic animals. In her spare time, she loves to go to the beach, take her son fishing, and spend time with her family.
Amaris was born and raised in South Florida, but also has roots in Honduras. She went to FIU for Landscape Architecture but then realized her true dream was to work with animals. Since then, she has acquired many pets, including a bearded dragon, a finch, and a Dachshund mix named “Marbles”. She is also a foster for rescuing rabbits when needed. Her positive attitude towards our staff and clients on a day-to-day basis makes her a valuable member of our team.
Belle is from New Jersey and moved here to go to Nova Southeastern University. She found her love for animals working at a sea turtle hospital and plans to go to veterinary school after her undergrad. She assists with a rabbit rescue and has 2 rescued animals of her own: Oakley, her dog, and Legacy, her snake. During her free time, she enjoys reading, cooking, and spending time on the water.
